I have decided to document my corner of the world. Up to now, I have been of the mindset that I need to go someplace else to find things to photograph. I constantly have requests from some of the photography forums that I belong to, to show them the "desert" So far I have resisted, probably because the desert is something I see everyday and it does not hold the same interest to me as it might to someone who has never been here... but upon further examination of this area and my bank balance, I have decided that these requests are very valid. So this weekend hubby and I set off for an area about 30 miles north of Yuma, along the Colorado River. Up there you find a place called Martinez Lake. Which is a rec area for those who have more money then brains. Sorry I consider owning a boat to be, as the saying goes, just a hole in the water you throw money into. And with gas prices what they are - its irresponsible. Anyway it can also be a great place for photography. So we set off for the area and I had in my mind some nice sunset photos over the river...what I found instead, and we never really made it to the river for shots I wanted, was amazing...
These guys apparently are descendants from the original herds that were brought here by the Spanish Conquistadors 100's of years ago. They were the pack animal of choice for miners who made their way here to the west in the 17-1800's. When the mines went bust, the burros were abandoned and left to fend for themselves in the desert where they live today. Many of these burros have something called "the Spanish Cross" on their backs...you can see in my picture the black stripe that goes over the back from shoulder to shoulder. What you can't see is the strip that runs from ears to tail, thus making the cross on their back near their whithers.
When we happened on this herd, it was in the last light of evening and so some of them were settling in for beddyby time...
They were very interested in us, but tolerant enough to let me get some good shots via telephoto lens...These guys were just one form of desert life we found, we also ran across quail, jack rabbits, and coyotes... I will post more in the coming days...Hope you enjoy

I am stoked. We are getting a surge in our monsoon here in the desert SW which means a higher chance of thunderstorms - ie: lightning. Great photo ops. I guess you have to live here to understand just how exciting it is when we finally do get to the time of the year when we might actually get some rain...sigh. I really do live a pretty uncomplicated life as evidenced by my excitment over the possibility of a little rain lol.
Anyway....
A fellow blogger and really cool person posted a meme of her own. I loved it and thought I would take it forward here at vox and see if anyone else is up to this challenge and in effect break my self-imposed exile from blogging -at least for this one post.
So here’s the meme: if money weren’t the issue (or tangible benefits of any kind really), what would your dream job be? Where? Why?
Mine is travel photographer/writer. Where would be all over the world. The why is because it combines the two things I love more then most other things - photography and travel. 2nd to that I would own an animal sanctuary/refuge. Sort of like a no-kill shelter, but on a grander scale taking in larger animals as well. This would involve a large area of land as well as monetary resources to support it....but hey the meme says money is not an issue...sooooooo.
Would love to hear others dreams...so please feel free to either post here in comments or blog about it yourself on your blog...if you do that let me know so I can go check it out.
We were in a plane this time...a little twin engine bugger. Next time I want to do this in a helicopter. That should help eliminate the bumpiness.
Enjoy these last two in my serious. pardon the little window glare at the top of the rainbow.

I have to admit I was not expecting too much, maybe a large man man park and enclosure with the occassional butterfly floating by, then of course I pictured myself running through the enclosure like the mad photographer, chasing down the few flutterbys to try to get a good snap of them.
Boy was I in for a shock.
Yes it is well manicured and botanically complete with many types of butterfly seducing plants and flora, and it is a man made place and well enclosed - they even station rangers (guards) at the exits to make sure that no little butterfly is attempting to hijack you and make an escape into freedom. It is larger then I had thought it would be, and they have a sort of laboratory there that is glassed in and viewers can see what sorts of plants they are trying to root and what sort of catapillers are trying to cocoon up.
Beyond that you enter the butterfly enclosure and right off the bat you are ascended on my all manner of butterfly, they float through your legs, land on your head and extremeties. I have never seen so many butterflys in my life and it was a photographers paradise. I included just one of many pictures I tool at butterfly world, but I am going to include a link to a slide show of some of the better pictures I took at the end of this post.
Butterfly world is also a botanical garden as well as it includes a bird aviary so you might see the odd picture of plant or bird in the slide show.
I hope you enjoy my pictures as much as I enjoyed taking them... Butterflys galore!
I am home and none the worse for wear. Its taken me 3 days to get to the blog in order to announce my return and for that I apologize, but upon our arrival home (roughly 2.15am Sunday morn) I was met with my daughter contracting a very nasty stomach virus. I have to be honest, I was a little concerned that this might have something to do with that tomato recall the US is going through, but Celi HATES tomatoes so I was pretty sure that that was not it. Then Britney, one of her friends that accompanied us, rang us to say that she too was with the stomach bug.
Anyway, Celi is feeling slightly better today, and I am finally able to get to some of the neglected things that leaving a house for 7 days occurs, such as dusting, vacuuming, sweeping, etc. and of course blogging.
We had a blast on the holiday, lots of pictures to share - when I get some time to share them I promise I will...for now here is a self-titled picture of "Pam's toes on vacation" Doncha just love the polish colour??!!
Please be patient with me faithful readers....errr all 2 of you (lol) I am buried under some things, at the moment, that are keeping me from thinking rationally enough to post coherently.
In the meantime, enjoy my final pictures of San Diego. This is Fort Rosecrans Cemetary at Pt Loma. It has always fascinated and humbled me as we drive past it to the monument up on the point....it is definitely a place for reflection and a place of honour.
For you my friend. Its looking up the coast towards La Jolla from Sunset Cliffs.
I have a secret to share. Sometimes I call up my pictures of this lovely area and just stare at them...to me they are so calming and peaceful.
I need to take up a collection. Contribute to the "move Pam to San Diego" fund. I take paypal.
Enjoy the view.
So, I thought I would throw up another photo from the San Diego trip. This is one from up in the La Jolla area. There is a Church just off the interstate there. I believe it is a mormon church (feel free to correct me if I am wrong) and at night when it is lit up like it is here, it is very ethereal looking. The moon happened to be rising just beyond it so caught it in the picture for moods sake.
I dunno, for some reason this particular picture makes me think of Sleeping Beauty's castle.
Pat, I am sure you will know what church this is...
I gotta say I just love my little 50mm lens.
enjoy.
Apparently a rather large ship...cruise, or something, was out there in the distance and it was passing by as the sun set. Its hard to see in the above photo, but zooming in on it in PSE it is a clear silouette...not to mention that the colors in this photo were breathtaking and might find a home on one of my walls in the living room.
Enjoy.
